Complementary and integrative therapies such as massage, reflexology and Reiki provide comfort, relief and a better quality of life for cancer patients, survivors, and their caregivers.
Massage and Bodywork is not a treatment for cancer. Rather, it is:
- A comfort measure, an intervention that strengthens the body, mind and spirit.
- A support for the person whose organs are affected by chemotherapy, whose tissue is bound down from the adhesions caused by radiation, or who has limited function due to the scars from surgery.
- It is a soothing, nurturing human touch for those who need to enhance their quality of life, reduce stress, feel more in control, and manage the side effects of their treatment.
- Massage and Bodywork helps people heal, from the inside out, moving them toward wholeness, even for a day or an hour.
By making the right adjustments in pressure, site restrictions and positioning, massage and bodywork can be given at nearly every stage of cancer treatment. Touch therapies lessen the severity of chemo, radiation and surgery, making the treatment process easier to tolerate.
